Description |
|
Transverse sections of a control mouse heart (A and C) and a heart 14 days after permanent ligation of the left anterior descending artery (B and D).
The anterolateral myocardium is replaced by a thin fibrous scar tissue. Panels C and D show high magnification view of normal and infarcted area of myocardium, respectively. RV, right ventricle; LV, left ventricle; v, blood vessels. Arrows in panel B indicate the borders of the infarcted area. (Click on image to enlarge)

Frontal view of a sham-operated heart at 8 weeks.
Horizontal lines indicate the level of cross-sections as shown below.

Cross-sectional view of a sham-operated heart at 8 weeks. Sections are spaced 100 microns apart.
The image that clearly shows both papillary muscles (no. 9) serves as a reference section to determine the position and size of the infarct in mice that underwent ligation of the left ascending (LAD) coronary artery.
LV, left ventricle; RV, right ventricle; IVS, intraventricular septum

Cross-sectional view of an infarcted heart at 8 weeks after LAD ligation. Sections are spaced 100 microns apart. Arrowheads indicate the infarcted area.
The image that clearly shows both papillary muscles (no. 9) was used as a reference section to determine the position and size of the infarct.
LV, left ventricle; RV, right ventricle; IVS, intraventricular septum

The below images are longitudinal sections stained with Hematoxylin/Eosin, and demonstrate the progression of the thinning and deterioration of the left ventricle where the infarction took place. Click on images to see an enlarged picture of the heart.
