The Cardiovascular Genetics Center in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School has been at the forefront of research into the molecular basis of heart disease for over a decade. Led by Drs. Jonathan and Christine Seidman, the Center's research teams have made important contributions to uncovering the roles of mutations in sarcomere protein genes and other genes in the development of familial hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathies. The laboratory's contributions also include the creation of important mouse models that are being used to investigate the physiology of cardiomyopathy and prospects for its treatment.

The laboratory employs state-of-the-art tools in its investigations. High-throughput sequencing is performed on an ABI 3700 automated sequencer in the HMS Biopolymers Facility, also located in the Department of Genetics.

The research efforts and products of this CardioGenomics component are detailed under Project 3, Sarcomere Gene Mutation Screening.
